On National Sleep Day, we talk to Ben about how cashflow is the only thing that keeps him up worrying at night when it comes to his business and how he’s using Fluidly to ensure he can look ahead with confidence – and get that all-important good night’s sleep.
We know from a piece of research done by QuickBooks that 69% of small business owners have been sleepless due to worry about their business cashflow. Does this resonate with you?
100%, cashflow is the only thing that keeps me up at night.
When was the time that you have been most worried about your business finance?
We take risks to work on incredible projects that we value. The industry is undergoing a massive change at the moment due to the way that people consume content and also due to the removal of barriers to enter the market (eg. every phone is a camera now).
We are currently in the middle of our toughest time as a business due to cashflow, yet tantalisingly close to a record year too. Go figure.
What has worked for you in terms of being able to relax and get the stress of running a business off your mind?
It has taken me a long time to work this all out and I’m still learning but I have learnt to prioritise my sleep above everything else and to only look at what I can control.
I read Matthew Walker’s excellent book called Why We Sleep which I found to be a game changer.
When your business finances feel more in control does it have a noticeable effect on your sleep?
Absolutely. Knowing we have no major concerns with cashflow enables me to relax.
Does Fluidly help you control your finances? And if so, how?
The app helps me look forwards, and having even a rough insight into my cashflow is key to getting ahead of the problem.
By knowing what’s ahead you can make better, more informed decisions that could be the difference between going bust or thriving.
